Brother Current Laser MFC/DCP Error Messages and Fixes
A larger current Brother laser family reference covering paper, toner, drum, fuser, scan, fax, touchscreen, memory and administrator messages. Some fax/ADF/touchscreen messages only apply to models that have those features.
2-sided Disabled
The back cover is not completely closed or the 2-sided tray is not installed completely.
- Close the back cover until it locks.
- Remove and firmly reinstall the 2-sided tray.
- If the message remains, check for paper/debris preventing either part from seating.
Access Denied
Secure Function Lock 3.0 is restricting the function you tried to use.
- This is an administrator policy, not a printer hardware fault.
- Ask the administrator to check Secure Function Lock permissions for your user/function.
- Retry after the policy or login is corrected.
Cannot Detect
The machine cannot detect the drum unit or toner cartridge.
- Remove the toner/drum assembly.
- Remove the toner from the drum, reinstall it firmly, then reinstall the complete assembly.
- If detection still fails, verify the toner/drum is the correct part and replace the failed supply if needed.
Cannot Print ##
The machine has a mechanical problem. The two-character suffix after Cannot Print is important.
- Write down the full Cannot Print code before restarting.
- If the MFC contains received faxes you need, follow Brother's transfer/print procedure before powering off where applicable.
- Power the machine off, wait a few minutes, and turn it on again.
- If the same code returns, use Brother/service with the full suffix and exact model.
Cannot Scan ##
The machine has a mechanical problem affecting scanning; the two-character suffix matters.
- Write down the complete Cannot Scan code.
- Remove the document from the ADF/scanner path.
- Power the machine off and back on.
- If the same code returns, use Brother/service with the full suffix.
Cannot Scan — document too long for 2-sided scanning
On applicable touchscreen models, the document is too long for 2-sided scanning.
- Cancel the current scan.
- Use a supported document length/size, or disable 2-sided scanning for that original.
- Retry the scan.
Cartridge Error
The toner cartridge is not installed correctly.
- Remove the toner/drum assembly.
- Take the toner cartridge out of the drum and reinstall it until it locks.
- Reinstall the assembly. If the message remains, verify the toner is correct and undamaged.
Comm.Error
Poor telephone-line quality caused a fax communication error.
- Send the fax again.
- If it repeats, test another telephone line if available.
- If the problem continues across fax calls, ask the telephone provider to check line quality.
Cooling Down
The inside of the machine is too hot, so printing is paused while the fan cools it.
- Wait for cooling to finish; the machine should resume automatically.
- Make sure all vents are clear.
- If the fan is not spinning, disconnect power for several minutes and reconnect it.
Cover is Open
The front cover, fuser cover, or ADF cover is not completely closed.
- Open and firmly close the front cover.
- If the message remains, check the fuser cover inside the back cover and close it fully.
- On ADF models, close the ADF cover as well. If the message persists with all covers latched, inspect for a jam or cover-sensor issue.
Disconnected
The other person or fax machine stopped the fax call.
- Retry sending or receiving.
- If it happens repeatedly on VoIP, Brother suggests using the Basic (for VoIP) compatibility setting.
- If only one destination fails, verify that destination/number before changing the printer.
Document Jam
The original was not inserted or fed correctly through the ADF, or it is too long.
- Remove the jammed original from the ADF.
- Clear scraps/debris from the ADF paper path.
- Press Stop/Exit or the on-screen cancel control, straighten the original, and retry.
DR Mode in Use
Distinctive Ring is enabled, so the receive mode cannot be changed normally.
- Open the fax Distinctive Ring setting.
- Turn Distinctive Ring off if you need to change Receive Mode.
- Then select the desired receive mode.
Drum !
The corona wire needs cleaning, or the toner/drum assembly is not installed correctly.
- Remove the assembly and clean the corona wire using the green tab.
- Return the green tab to its home position.
- Make sure toner is locked into the drum and reinstall the assembly.
Drum End Soon
The drum unit is near the end of its life.
- Continue printing if output is acceptable.
- Order the correct replacement drum now.
- Replace it when Replace Drum appears or quality requires it.
Jam 2-sided
Paper is jammed in the 2-sided paper tray/path.
- Pull out the paper tray and 2-sided tray.
- Open the back cover and remove all jammed paper and scraps.
- Close the cover and reinstall both trays firmly.
Jam Inside
Paper is jammed inside the machine.
- Open the front cover and remove the toner/drum assembly.
- Pull out all jammed paper and scraps carefully.
- Reinstall the assembly and close the cover. If the message remains, use Start/Retry if the model offers it after confirming the path is clear.
Jam Rear
Paper is jammed in the back/fuser area.
- Let the fuser area cool if it is hot.
- Open the back/fuser cover and remove all jammed paper.
- Close the fuser cover fully. If the message remains, use Start/Retry only after confirming no scraps remain.
Jam Tray 1
Paper is jammed in Tray 1.
- Pull Tray 1 completely out.
- Gently remove the jammed sheet and all scraps.
- Reload supported paper below the fill line and reinstall the tray firmly.
Limit Exceeded
The print limit configured in Secure Function Lock 3.0 has been reached.
- This is an administrator policy limit, not a paper or toner fault.
- Ask the administrator to check the user's Secure Function Lock limit/counter.
- Retry after the limit is changed or reset.
Manual Feed
The driver selected Manual as the paper source but the manual feed slot is empty.
- If manual feed is intentional, insert the requested paper in the manual feed slot.
- If it was accidental, change the driver paper source to Tray 1/Auto Select.
- Retry the job.
Media Type Mismatch
The media type selected in the driver differs from the paper type configured on the machine.
- Identify the actual media loaded: plain, thick, label, envelope, etc.
- Set the machine/tray Paper Type to match the loaded media, or change the driver to match the tray.
- Retry the job.
No Caller ID
There is no incoming Caller ID history or Caller ID service is not active.
- If no call has been received yet, there may simply be no history.
- If you expect Caller ID service, confirm the service with the telephone provider.
- This message does not indicate a printer engine failure.
No Paper Tray1
Tray 1 is empty or the paper is not loaded correctly.
- Load paper and set the guides to the correct size.
- If paper is already present, remove and reload it so the stack is flat and below the maximum line.
- Reinsert the tray fully and retry.
No Response/Busy
The fax number did not answer or is busy.
- Verify the fax number.
- Wait and try again.
- If the number is known to be available but repeatedly fails, then troubleshoot the telephone/fax line.
No Toner
The toner cartridge or toner/drum assembly is not installed correctly.
- Remove the toner/drum assembly.
- Remove and reinstall the toner in the drum, then reinstall the complete assembly.
- If the message continues, Brother directs replacement of the toner cartridge.
Out of Fax Memory
The machine's fax memory is full.
- Delete unwanted received fax data if Fax Preview is used.
- Print or otherwise clear stored faxes you still need.
- Retry the fax after memory is available.
Out of Memory
The machine's memory is full.
- If copying/faxing, send/copy the pages scanned so far if offered, or stop and let other operations finish.
- Clear unneeded fax data from memory.
- For printing, reduce resolution or split the job into smaller pieces.
Print Data Full
Stored secure-print data has filled the machine's memory.
- Open the secure-print/stored print data list.
- Delete old secure print jobs you no longer need.
- Resend the current job after memory is available.
Replace Drum
The drum unit has reached its replacement point.
- Replace the drum with the correct part.
- Reset the drum counter only after physically replacing the drum, using the exact-model procedure.
- Print a test page and confirm the message clears.
Replace Toner
The toner cartridge has reached the end of its life and the machine stops printing.
- Install the correct new toner cartridge.
- Lock it into the drum unit and reinstall the assembly.
- Retry printing after the machine recognizes the new toner.
Self-Diagnostic
The fuser is too hot or is not working correctly.
- Power the machine off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on.
- Leave it powered on and idle for about 15 minutes.
- If Self-Diagnostic returns, this is a persistent fuser/temperature fault and needs service.
Size Error
The selected paper tray does not support the paper size requested by the driver.
- Check the paper size requested by the application/driver.
- Load that size in a tray that supports it, or change the driver/tray setting to the size actually loaded.
- Retry the job.
Size Error 2-sided / Size Error DX
The requested paper size is not suitable for automatic 2-sided printing.
- Use a duplex-supported size; Brother lists Letter, Legal, Mexico Legal, India Legal and Folio for the cited models.
- Make the driver paper size and tray paper-size setting match.
- Or disable automatic 2-sided printing for the job.
Size Mismatch
The physical paper in the tray does not match the configured paper size.
- Load the correct size or change the tray size setting to match what is actually loaded.
- Set the paper guides correctly.
- Make the print job request the same size and retry.
Toner Ended
The toner cartridge is exhausted.
- Replace the toner cartridge with the correct new supply.
- Seat it in the drum and reinstall the assembly.
- Retry after the machine recognizes the new cartridge.
Toner Low
The toner cartridge is near the end of its life, but printing can continue.
- Continue printing while quality is acceptable.
- Order a replacement now.
- Install it when Replace Toner appears or output quality becomes unacceptable.
Touchscreen Initialization Failed
The touchscreen was pressed before startup finished or debris may be trapped between the lower touchscreen and frame.
- Make sure nothing is touching or resting on the touchscreen during startup.
- If the message remains, Brother says to slide a piece of stiff paper between the lower touchscreen edge and frame to push out debris.
- Restart after the screen area is clear.
Wrong Toner Cartridge
The installed toner cartridge is not the correct supply for the machine.
- Check the toner supply/order number for the exact model.
- Remove the wrong cartridge and install the correct one in the drum unit.
- Reinstall the assembly and retry.
