Exact display messages for HL-L2400D, HL-L2405W, HL-L2420DW, HL-L2460DW, HL-L2460DWXL and HL-L2865DW, with the cause and what to do next.

2-sided Disabled

The back cover is not fully closed or the 2-sided tray is not fully installed.

  1. Open and firmly close the back cover until it latches.
  2. Pull out the 2-sided tray and push it fully back into position.
  3. If the message returns, check for paper or damage preventing either part from seating.

Cannot Detect

The printer cannot recognize the toner cartridge or drum unit.

  1. Remove the toner-and-drum assembly.
  2. Separate and firmly reseat the toner cartridge in the drum unit.
  3. Reinstall the complete assembly. If detection still fails, a damaged, incorrect, or failed toner/drum component may need replacement.

Cannot Print ##

Brother uses this message for a mechanical problem; the two characters after Cannot Print matter for service diagnosis.

  1. Write down the complete two-character code.
  2. Power the printer off normally, wait a few minutes, and restart it.
  3. If the same code returns immediately, stop looping power cycles and provide the exact code and model to Brother/service.

Cartridge Error

The toner cartridge is not installed correctly in the drum unit.

  1. Remove the toner/drum assembly.
  2. Release the toner from the drum and install it again until it locks.
  3. Reinstall the assembly. If the message remains with the correct cartridge, inspect or replace the supply.

Change T1 Paper?

On this family the standard Tray 1 is not installed correctly.

  1. Pull Tray 1 out and remove paper or debris caught behind/under it.
  2. Check the stack and guides, then push the tray all the way in so it sits flush.
  3. If the message remains, inspect the tray seating area for obstruction or damage.

Cooling Down

The printer interior is too hot and printing has paused until the temperature returns to normal.

  1. Leave the printer powered on and idle so it can cool.
  2. Make sure ventilation openings are not blocked.
  3. If Cooling Down appears frequently under light use, investigate the environment or printer cooling/hardware.

Cover is Open

The front cover or the fuser cover inside the rear cover is not fully closed.

  1. Open and firmly close the front cover.
  2. If the message remains, check the rear cover and fuser cover; let hot parts cool first.
  3. Remove visible jam scraps preventing closure. Persistent errors can indicate a latch or cover sensor problem.

Drum !

The corona wire needs cleaning or the toner/drum assembly is not seated correctly.

  1. Remove the drum/toner assembly without touching the drum surface.
  2. Slide the corona-wire cleaning tab across and return it to its home position.
  3. Reseat the toner in the drum and reinstall the assembly. If the warning remains, the drum may need replacement.

Drum End Soon

The drum unit is approaching the end of its rated life.

  1. Continue printing if quality is acceptable.
  2. Obtain the correct replacement drum for the exact model.
  3. Replace it when Replace Drum appears or print quality becomes unacceptable.

Jam 2-sided

Paper is jammed in the duplex tray or rear/fuser area.

  1. Let the fuser area cool if needed.
  2. Remove the 2-sided tray and clear paper and scraps.
  3. If the message remains, check the rear/fuser jam path, then reinstall all trays/covers fully.

Jam Inside

Paper is stuck inside the printer behind the front cover.

  1. Open the front cover after the printer stops and remove the toner/drum assembly.
  2. Clear all visible paper and scraps without forcing internal rollers.
  3. Reinstall the assembly. Repeated jams in the same location point to paper or feed-path hardware.

Jam Rear

Paper is jammed around the back/fuser exit area.

  1. Allow the fuser area to cool before reaching inside.
  2. Open the rear/fuser covers and remove the jam slowly, including torn pieces.
  3. Close both covers completely and retry. Repeated rear jams can indicate exit/fuser-path hardware.

Jam Tray 1

Paper is jammed in Tray 1 or its feed opening.

  1. Pull Tray 1 completely out and clear paper/scraps from the tray and opening.
  2. Reload flat supported paper below the fill line and set the guides correctly.
  3. If Tray 1 repeatedly jams, inspect pickup/feed parts rather than forcing more paper through.

Manual Feed

The print job is configured for the manual feed slot and no media is loaded there.

  1. If Manual Feed was accidental, change the job's paper source to Tray 1 or Auto Select.
  2. If manual feed is intentional, load the requested sheet and adjust the guides.
  3. Retry the job.

Media Mismatch

The media type selected in the driver differs from the paper type configured on the printer.

  1. Identify the actual media loaded: plain, thick, labels, envelope, etc.
  2. Set that same type on the printer/tray.
  3. Set the same media type in the driver and retry.

No Drum Unit

The drum/toner assembly is missing or not seated correctly.

  1. Confirm the toner cartridge is locked into the drum unit.
  2. Push the complete assembly fully into the printer and close the front cover.
  3. If the message remains, verify the drum is the correct part and is not damaged.

No Paper

The machine is out of paper or cannot use the paper as loaded.

  1. Reload a modest stack of clean, flat, supported paper below the maximum line.
  2. Set the guides to the paper size without squeezing the stack.
  3. If paper is present but still not detected, continue with pickup/feed/sensor troubleshooting.

No Paper T1

The printer cannot feed paper from Tray 1.

  1. Pull Tray 1 out, clear scraps/curling, and reload supported paper below the fill line.
  2. Set the guides to the correct size and reinsert the tray fully.
  3. If Tray 1 still cannot feed, pickup rollers or tray sensing may need attention.

No Toner

The toner cartridge or complete toner/drum assembly is not installed correctly.

  1. Remove the assembly and reseat the toner in the drum until it locks.
  2. Reinstall the complete assembly.
  3. If No Toner remains, replace the toner cartridge; a failed or incorrect cartridge may not be detected.

Out of Memory

The print job requires more printer memory than is available.

  1. Cancel the current oversized job instead of repeatedly resending it.
  2. Reduce resolution/graphics complexity or split the document into smaller sections.
  3. If ordinary small jobs also fail, investigate printer memory/hardware.

Replace Drum

The drum should be replaced. If the message appears immediately after replacement, the drum counter may not have been reset.

  1. Install the correct new drum and transfer/reseat toner as the model requires.
  2. Reset the drum counter only after physically replacing the drum, using the exact model procedure.
  3. Print a test page and verify both the message and print quality.

Replace Toner

The toner cartridge has reached the end of its usable life.

  1. Install the correct new toner cartridge for the exact model.
  2. Lock it firmly into the drum unit and reinstall the assembly.
  3. Print a test page; the message should clear when the new toner is recognized.

Self-Diagnostic

The fuser is too hot or is not operating correctly.

  1. Turn the printer off normally, wait briefly, and restart.
  2. Leave it powered on and idle for about 15 minutes so the fuser can stabilize.
  3. If Self-Diagnostic returns, stop repeated resets; a persistent fuser/temperature fault needs service.

Size Error DX

The loaded/selected paper size is not supported for automatic 2-sided printing.

  1. Load a size supported for duplex and make the tray setting match.
  2. Choose that same size in the driver, or disable automatic 2-sided printing.
  3. Retry after the paper and settings agree.

Size Error

The tray selected by the job does not support the paper size specified by the driver.

  1. Check the application's and driver's requested paper size.
  2. Check the actual paper and tray setting.
  3. Use a supported tray/size combination and resend the job.

Size Mismatch

The paper in the tray does not match the size the printer believes is loaded.

  1. Verify the actual sheet size and set the guides correctly.
  2. Set the tray size in the printer to match.
  3. Make the print job request the same size. If the message repeats, watch for multi-feeds or tray-setting problems.

Toner Ended

The toner cartridge is exhausted and should be replaced.

  1. Install the correct replacement toner.
  2. Seat it firmly in the drum unit and reinstall the complete assembly.
  3. Retry printing after the cartridge is recognized.

Toner Low

This is an advance warning; the cartridge is not necessarily empty yet.

  1. Continue printing while quality is acceptable.
  2. Obtain the correct replacement toner so it is ready.
  3. Replace it when instructed or when quality becomes unacceptable.

Wrong Toner

The installed toner cartridge is not the correct supply for the printer.

  1. Check the toner part/order number against the exact printer model.
  2. Remove the incorrect cartridge and install the correct toner in the drum unit.
  3. Reinstall the assembly and retry.
