Canon TS6420 Support Codes and Fixes

Use the exact support code shown on the printer or computer. This page covers the TS6420 codes for which Canon publishes a specific cause and a useful corrective action.

Why some codes are not hereCanon lists additional TS6420 codes whose public instruction is only to restart the printer or request repair. Printer Triage does not turn those generic service codes into guessed component failures.

1000 — No paper in the rear tray

The rear tray is empty or its paper is not loaded correctly.

  1. Load paper squarely in the rear tray.
  2. Move both paper guides against the paper edges without squeezing the stack.
  3. Close the feed-slot cover and press OK.

1003 — No paper in the cassette

The cassette is empty or the paper is not positioned correctly.

  1. Load supported plain paper in the cassette.
  2. Set the paper guides against the edges.
  3. Reinsert the cassette and press OK.

1200 — Scanning unit / cover is open

The top scanning unit or cover is not fully closed.

  1. Lower the scanning unit/cover completely.
  2. Wait briefly for the printer to recognize that it is closed.

1300 — Paper jam from the rear tray

Paper jammed while feeding from the rear tray.

  1. Stop the job if needed.
  2. Pull visible paper slowly from the output slot or rear tray using both hands.
  3. If it tears or cannot be reached, inspect the accessible inside/rear paper path rather than pulling forcefully.
  4. Reload paper correctly and press OK.

1304 — Automatic duplex paper jam

Paper jammed while the printer was performing automatic two-sided printing.

  1. Check the output slot, inside paper path and cassette feed area for the jam.
  2. Remove the sheet slowly without tearing it.
  3. Reload paper correctly and press OK.
  4. Reprint the affected page if it did not finish correctly.

1309 — Paper size cannot be used for automatic duplex

The job requests automatic two-sided printing on an unsupported paper size.

  1. Cancel the job with Stop.
  2. For automatic duplex on this model, use A4, Letter, A5 or B5.
  3. Change the job's paper-size/duplex settings and resend it.

1313 — Jam while pulling a printed sheet back in

The printer jammed while reversing a printed sheet for the next duplex pass.

  1. Check the output slot first.

  2. If the error returns, replace that cartridge with a compatible new cartridge.

1650 — Ink cartridge cannot be recognized

The cartridge is not installed properly, or a subscription cartridge is installed in a state where it cannot be used.

  1. Remove the flagged cartridge.
  2. Install the cartridge supplied for the printer or another cartridge valid for the printer's current subscription state.

1651 — Subscription/network requirements are not met

The printer cannot validate subscription ink. Canon lists network connection, web-service agreement and subscription status as possible causes.

  1. Make sure the printer is connected to Wi-Fi.
  2. Check that Canon Web Service Status is registered and the web-services license has been accepted.
  3. Confirm the ink subscription is active.
  4. If the subscription was canceled, use normal retail cartridges rather than subscription cartridges.

1682 — FINE cartridge cannot be recognized

Canon directs replacement of the affected FINE cartridge.

  1. Replace the cartridge with a compatible cartridge.
  2. If a correct replacement also fails, the printer may require service.

1684 — Ink cartridge not recognized or incompatible

The cartridge may be installed incorrectly or may not be compatible with the TS6420.

  1. Verify the cartridge model is correct.
  2. Remove and reinstall it firmly.
  3. Replace it if the printer still cannot recognize it.

1686 — Ink cartridge issue / remaining-ink detection

The printer detected a problem with one or more ink cartridges.

  1. The preferred fix is to replace each cartridge identified by the printer.
  2. If you intentionally continue with the installed cartridge, Canon allows remaining-ink detection to be disabled by holding Stop for at least five seconds.
  3. Once detection is disabled, the printer can no longer reliably report remaining ink and print quality may degrade as ink runs out.

1687 — FINE cartridge is not installed properly

A cartridge is not seated or latched correctly.

  1. Open the scanning unit/cover and the cartridge locking cover.
  2. Remove the cartridge and verify it is compatible.
  3. Reinstall it and press the locking cover down until it clicks.
  4. Close the printer and retry.

1688 — One or more ink cartridges are empty

The printer has detected an empty cartridge.

  1. Replace each cartridge reported as empty.
  2. Canon also allows remaining-ink detection to be disabled by holding Stop for at least five seconds, but the printer will stop monitoring that cartridge and output quality can deteriorate as residual ink is exhausted.

168D — FINE cartridge cannot be recognized

The printer cannot recognize the cartridge and Canon directs replacement.

  1. Replace the affected FINE cartridge with a compatible cartridge.
  2. If the error persists with a known-good cartridge, service may be needed.

1702 — Ink absorber almost full

The waste-ink absorber is approaching capacity.

  1. Press OK to continue if the printer allows it.
  2. Plan for absorber service; this warning will eventually become a stop-printing condition.
