Printer Not Found or Not Recognized in Windows 11
Separate a printer/network discovery problem from a Windows spooler or driver problem before repeatedly reinstalling software.
Start hereFor a network printer, knowing the printer's IP address lets you test whether the PC can reach the device even when Windows discovery fails.
What to check
Step 1
Check the physical or network connection.
For USB, reconnect directly to the PC. For network printers, confirm the printer is connected to the intended network.
Step 2
Restart the Print Spooler.
Microsoft specifically includes restarting the Print Spooler when Windows cannot find or recognize a printer.
Step 3
For network printers, identify the printer IP and test reachability.
If you can reach the printer by IP but Windows cannot discover it, the problem is narrower than a total network outage.
Step 4
Try Windows' manual add flow.
Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device. Use the manual option when automatic discovery does not find the correct printer.
Step 5
Use the printer manufacturer's current driver when needed.
Microsoft recommends obtaining updated printer software/drivers from the manufacturer's official support site.
