Add a network printer by IP on Mac

Use this only when the printer is already on the network but the Mac cannot find it normally. You will need the printer's current IP address.

Do not guess the IP addressFind it on the printer's screen or network/status page, or get it from someone who manages the network.

Before you start

Make sure the Mac and printer are on the same home or office network and the printer is turned on. An IP address often looks like 192.168.1.25 or 10.0.0.25.

Add the printer

  1. Open Apple  menu → System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
  2. Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
  3. Click the IP button at the top.
  4. Type the printer's IP address into Address.
  5. If AirPrint is offered for your printer, use it.
  6. Check the printer shown in the Use field, then click Add.

If Mac asks you to choose a protocol

If AirPrint is available, that is usually the simplest choice. If it is not, do not guess between IPP, LPD, or HP Jetdirect. Check the printer maker's instructions for your exact model or ask whoever set up the network.

If the printer still will not add

Check the IP address again. If it changed or the printer is on a different network, the Mac will not be able to reach it at the old address.
