Everyday problem · Paper jam
Printer says paper jam, but no paper is stuck
Sometimes a tiny scrap—or no visible paper at all—can leave the jam message on. Check the easy-to-reach places first.
Before reaching insideTurn the printer off. Only open the trays and jam doors meant for normal use. Do not remove covers or reach into hot parts of a laser printer.
1. Look in the normal paper path
- Input tray
- Output area
- Rear jam door
- Two-sided-printing door, if your printer has one
- Document feeder, if the message is about the scanner feeder
A flashlight can help you spot a small torn scrap, label, paper clip, or other object.
2. Close the trays and doors firmly
Make sure every normal door and tray is fully closed.
3. Turn the printer back on
If the message clears, try the original print job again. If it works, stop there.
4. If the jam message comes right back
Do not keep taking the printer apart. Use the jam instructions for your exact model. A small hidden scrap or a part that detects the paper may need attention.
Official example
HP notes on supported models that a jam message can be real or false, so the same safe paper-path checks are useful even when you cannot see a full sheet.
