HP DesignJet T730/T830 Error Codes and Fixes

HP's front-panel reference for the DesignJet T730/T830 family lists several exact numerical errors plus scanner-specific messages. Use the full code as displayed; a similar-looking code on another DesignJet family can have a different procedure.

Applies toHP DesignJet T730 printers and DesignJet T830 multifunction printers covered by HP's T730/T830 front-panel error reference.
System / restart

0001-0001 — Restart required

HP's published action for this code is to restart the printer.

  1. Use the normal power control to restart the DesignJet.
  2. Let initialization complete before resending the job.
  3. If the same code returns repeatedly, record the full code and firmware version before contacting HP support.
Paper / carriage

0081-0008 — Possible paper or carriage jam

HP says there may be a paper-path jam or carriage obstruction.

  1. Check the paper path and remove jammed sheets or scraps using the normal jam procedure.
  2. Make sure the carriage path is not blocked by loose paper or packing material.
  3. Restart after the obstruction is cleared.
Clock battery / service

0001-0082 — Real-time clock battery expired

The internal real-time clock battery has reached the end of its service life.

  1. Record the full error code.
  2. Do not open the electronics enclosure as a normal user repair.
  3. Contact HP support/service for the battery service procedure.
Service station

0021-0059 — Service station error

The service station reported an error; HP notes that a paper or carriage jam may be involved.

  1. Check and clear the paper path.
  2. Look for an obvious carriage obstruction without forcing the carriage mechanism.
  3. Restart the printer after the path is clear.
Service station

0021-0017 — Service station error

The service station reported an error; HP notes that a paper or carriage jam may be involved.

  1. Check and clear the paper path.
  2. Look for an obvious carriage obstruction without forcing internal parts.
  3. Restart the printer after the obstruction is removed.
Service station

0021-0161 — Service station error

HP's published first action is a printer restart.

  1. Restart the printer normally.
  2. If the code returns immediately, record it and avoid repeated power cycling.
  3. Use HP support if the service-station error persists.
Paper / carriage

0041-0017 — Possible paper or carriage jam

HP says there may be a paper or carriage jam.

  1. Inspect the normal paper path and remove any jammed media.
  2. Check for loose scraps that could block carriage movement.
  3. Retry only after the path is clear.
Paper / carriage

0042-0117 — Possible paper or carriage jam

HP says there may be a paper or carriage jam.

  1. Inspect and clear the paper path.
  2. Remove visible obstructions from the carriage path without disassembling the printer.
  3. Retry the job after the printer is clear.
Firmware / system

0079-0000 — Restart, then update firmware if it returns

HP directs a restart first and a firmware update if the error persists.

  1. Restart the printer.
  2. If 0079-0000 returns, install the latest HP firmware for the exact T730/T830 model.
  3. If the current firmware is already installed and the code remains, contact HP support.
Paper feed

0085-XXXX — Paper feeding problem

HP uses the 0085 family for a paper-feeding problem.

  1. Restart the printer as HP recommends.
  2. If the error returns, inspect the loaded media and paper path for a feed problem or obstruction.
  3. Keep the complete 0085 suffix when contacting support; it identifies the exact failure instance.
Carriage / encoder

0086-0008 — Possible jam or dirty carriage encoder strip

HP says to check for a paper/carriage jam and also clean the carriage encoder strip.

  1. Clear any jammed media from the paper and carriage path.
  2. Clean the encoder strip only using HP's documented procedure for this model.
  3. Restart and test after the strip and path are clean.
Scanner

0009-XXXX — Scanner error family

HP identifies 0009-series errors on the T730/T830 reference as scanner errors.

  1. Restart the printer/MFP.
  2. If the code returns, record the entire suffix rather than reporting only 0009.
  3. Use HP scanner diagnostics/support if a restart does not clear the condition.
Scanner / paper jam

Scanner paper jam

The scanner detected a jammed original.

  1. Open the scanner cover using the normal user procedure.
  2. Remove the jammed original slowly and check for torn pieces.
  3. Close the scanner and retry with the original straight and undamaged.
Scanner / cleaning

Scanner Dust detected

HP recommends scanner cleaning when this message appears.

  1. Use the documented scanner-cleaning procedure for the T830.
  2. Clean the scan glass/scan area without abrasive cleaners.
  3. Run the scan again; if streaks or the warning remain, continue with HP scanner diagnostics.
Scanner / memory

Scanner Out of memory

The current scan job is too large for available scanner memory.

  1. Lower the scan resolution.
  2. Increase compression when the output format supports it.
  3. Retry the scan in smaller sections if necessary.
