Mac printer driver or AirPrint problem
Many modern printers work on Mac through AirPrint and do not need a separate downloaded driver. Manufacturer software can still be useful for special features.
1. See how the printer is installed
Open Apple menu → System Settings → Printers & Scanners, click the printer, and look at its printer/software information. If it shows AirPrint, macOS is using Apple's built-in printing support.
2. If normal printing is broken
Do not assume a driver download is the answer. Check the printer queue and connection first. If needed, remove the printer and add it again. For a compatible printer, choose AirPrint when offered.
3. If only special features are missing
Accounting codes, finishing options, manufacturer scan tools, or unusual trays may require the printer maker's own Mac software. Download it only from the manufacturer's official support page for your exact model and macOS version.
4. If old software stopped working after a macOS update
Check the manufacturer's current Mac compatibility. If the printer supports AirPrint, a fresh AirPrint queue may be a safer option than reinstalling an obsolete driver.
