Everyday problem · Strange printed text

Printer prints random symbols or nonsense

If pages come out full of strange characters or code-like text, first find out whether the printer can print its own test page normally.

1. Print a test page from the printer itself

If the printer's own page is readable, the printer can make normal text. Move on to the computer.

If the printer's own page is also garbled, write down the printer model and any error message and use the printer maker's support for that model.

2. Try another simple program

On Windows, try Notepad or Paint. On a Mac, try TextEdit or Preview.

If that page prints normally, the original program or file is probably the problem.

3. If several programs print random symbols

Windows: remove and add the printer again using the correct printer model or the printer maker's official driver.

Mac: remove and add the printer again. Use AirPrint when the printer supports it.

4. Remove the bad print job before testing again

Delete the garbled or stuck job from the Windows print queue or Mac Print Center, then send one simple test page.

5. Use trusted printer software only

Use Windows, macOS/AirPrint, or the printer manufacturer's official support page. Avoid driver-download ads and unknown support tools.

If only one program fails, use the one-program guide instead.
