Scanner not working on Mac

If printing still works but scanning does not, that is useful information. Start with the Mac's scanner controls instead of factory-resetting the printer or Wi-Fi.

1. Look for Open Scanner

  1. Open Apple  menu → System Settings.
  2. Click Printers & Scanners.
  3. Click the printer or scanner.
  4. Look for Open Scanner.

If Open Scanner appears, try one simple page. If it works, the scanner itself and the Mac connection are working.

2. Try Image Capture

Press Command-Space, type Image Capture, and open it. Look in the sidebar under Devices or Shared for the scanner. Image Capture is included with macOS; you do not need to download it.

3. Check the connection

USB: reconnect the cable directly or through the adapter you normally use. Wi-Fi/network: make sure the Mac and printer/scanner are on the same normal network.

4. If the scanner used to appear and disappeared

Apple recommends deleting the scanner or multifunction printer and adding it again. Re-add the device before changing router settings or installing unrelated software.

5. If manufacturer software is required

Use the scanner/printer manufacturer's official Mac app or support page. Avoid remote-support pop-ups and third-party driver-updater sites.
