Install or reinstall a printer without making things worse

If the printer is already partly working, do not remove everything first. Check the existing setup, then add or re-add only when it is actually needed.

Safe ruleUse Windows, macOS, Windows Update, or the printer maker's official website. Avoid driver-download sites, “PC repair” utilities, and support pop-ups.

If you use Windows

Step 1

See whether the printer is already there

Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners. If the correct printer is listed, test it before removing it.

Step 2

If it is missing, use Add device

Turn the printer on. For Wi-Fi, make sure the printer and PC are on the same normal network. For USB, connect the cable directly while testing. Then use Add device.

Step 3

Try one page

If it prints, stop. You do not need extra printer software just because a download page says you do.

Step 4

Remove and add again only after simpler checks fail

Remove only the printer you are troubleshooting, add it again, then test before installing anything else.

If you use a Mac

Step 1

Open Printers & Scanners

Go to Apple  menu → System Settings → Printers & Scanners. If the printer is already listed, test it first.

Step 2

Add the printer normally

Click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax. If a compatible printer offers AirPrint, macOS can normally use it without a separate driver download.

Step 3

If a re-add is needed, remove only this printer

Do not jump straight to Reset Printing System. That is a much broader reset and should stay near the end of troubleshooting.

When extra manufacturer software makes sense

Some printers need their manufacturer's software for special scanning, finishing, account-code, or setup features. If you need it, start from the official printer support directory rather than searching for a driver download.

Do not call a phone number from a driver-download page or pop-up

A printer install should not turn into an unexpected remote-access session or a request for gift cards, cryptocurrency, or bank information. See Scam Safety if anything about the support offer feels strange.
