Phone / tablet · Printer apps

Do I need a printer app on my phone?

For basic printing, often no. Start with the printing built into the phone or tablet before installing extra apps.

iPhone or iPad

If the printer supports AirPrint, basic printing normally works without a separate printer driver or app. Use Share or Actions → Print in an app that supports printing.

Android

Many Android devices include a built-in/default print service. Open Settings and search for Printing to see whether one is already available and turned on.

When the printer maker's app can help

An official manufacturer app can be useful for:

  • First-time Wi-Fi setup
  • Scanning from an all-in-one printer
  • Ink or toner information
  • Special printer features
  • Models that are not found by the phone's built-in printing

What to avoid

Do not install a “driver fixer,” remote-support app, or printer utility from an advertisement just because the printer is missing. Use the App Store or Play Store and verify that the app is published by the printer manufacturer.
