Printer does not recognize a new ink cartridge

If this started right after changing ink, do not reinstall the printer software. First make sure the cartridge is the right one and is fully seated.

Do this firstRead the cartridge number and compare it with the number your exact printer model uses. Then remove and reinstall the cartridge slowly and firmly.
Step 1

Check the cartridge number

Two cartridges can look almost identical but fit different printer families. Use the number printed on the cartridge or package.

Step 2

Check for packaging

If the cartridge is new, make sure all normal protective tape or shipping material was removed as shown in the printer's replacement instructions.

Step 3

Reinstall it slowly

Remove the cartridge and put it back into the correct color/slot until it is fully seated or clicks into place.

Step 4

Close the cartridge door and wait

Give the printer a moment to check the cartridges. If the message clears, try the original print job again.

Step 5

If the same cartridge is still not detected

Check the manufacturer's support page for your exact model and cartridge number. Avoid cleaning inside cartridge slots unless the manufacturer specifically tells you to.

Do not download a “driver fixer” for this. A cartridge-detection message shown on the printer itself is usually a printer/cartridge issue, not a Windows or Mac driver problem.
