New ink or toner still says low, empty, or replace cartridge

Do not assume the new cartridge is bad right away. First check that the printer is looking at the cartridge you actually replaced and that it is seated correctly.

Start hereRead the message carefully. If it names a color, make sure that is the color you replaced.
Step 1

Check the exact message

“Low” can be a warning, while “Replace,” “Empty,” “No Toner,” or “Cannot Detect” may stop printing. Write down the exact wording.

Step 2

Make sure the correct supply was replaced

Laser printers may have separate toner and drum units. Color printers may be warning about a different color than the one you changed.

Step 3

Reinstall the new cartridge

Remove it the normal way and reinstall it slowly and firmly. Close the access door and wait for the printer to check supplies again.

Step 4

Try the original job again

If the warning clears and printing works, stop here.

Step 5

If the message stays

Use the support instructions for the exact printer model. Avoid generic “secret reset” sequences because supply-reset steps differ by model and can make diagnosis harder.

One useful distinction: On some printers, a “Toner Low” warning means the cartridge can still be used while print quality is acceptable. A “Replace Toner” message is a different state.
