Laser printer does not recognize the toner cartridge

If the printer says “No Toner,” “Cannot Detect,” or similar right after a toner change, start with the cartridge and drum assembly—not the computer.

Do this firstTurn the printer off, remove the toner/drum assembly the normal way, make sure the toner is seated correctly in the drum if your model uses separate pieces, then reinstall the assembly.
Step 1

Make sure you changed the toner

Some laser printers have a separate toner cartridge and drum unit. They can look like one large part when installed together.

Step 2

Check the toner model number

Make sure the cartridge is listed for your exact printer model.

Step 3

Seat the toner in the drum

If your printer uses separate toner and drum pieces, remove the toner from the drum and reinstall it until it locks into place.

Step 4

Reinstall the whole assembly

Put the toner/drum assembly back into the printer and close the normal access door completely.

Step 5

Try again

If the message clears, retry the original job. If the same new cartridge is still not detected, use the manufacturer's instructions for that exact model rather than a generic toner-reset trick.

Avoid random toner-reset videos. Reset procedures vary by model and can hide a real supply or drum problem.
