Printer Printing Blank Pages? Find Out Where the Problem Starts

Blank pages can come from the printer itself, the ink or toner supply, or the document being sent from the computer. A printer-generated test page is the fastest way to separate those possibilities.

Quick checks

  • Check that ink or toner is installed and recognized.
  • If you just replaced a supply, make sure protective tape or seals were removed.
  • Print a printer-generated test or status page if available.
  • Try a different simple document before changing drivers.

Try these fixes in order

Step 1

Print a page from the printer itself

Use a status, nozzle check, configuration, or other built-in report if your printer offers one.

Step 2

If the printer's own page is blank, stay at the printer

Check supplies, printhead/nozzle maintenance for inkjets, toner/drum seating for lasers, and any message on the printer.

Step 3

If the printer's own page is normal, test a different document

A blank output from only one file or app points away from the printer hardware.

Step 4

Check a newly replaced supply carefully

New cartridges or toner may have shipping seals, protective tape, or installation steps that prevent output.

Step 5

Avoid repeated deep cleanings

Use the manufacturer's normal maintenance procedure. Repeated cleaning cycles can waste a large amount of ink without fixing a non-ink problem.
