Printer Works With USB but Not Wi-Fi

If the same printer produces a normal page through USB, the print engine and at least one computer print path are working. That makes a wireless or network problem more likely than a general printer failure.

Safe first checks

  • Look at the Wi-Fi name on the printer, if its screen shows one, and compare it with the computer or phone.
  • Watch for Guest or Visitor Wi-Fi, which can keep devices separated.
  • Make sure the computer is not connected to a printer-looking network such as DIRECT-xx instead of the normal home network.
  • If the router, internet provider, Wi-Fi name, or password changed recently, reconnect the printer using its normal wireless setup.

What the result tells us

If USB keeps printing while Wi-Fi fails, replacing ink, toner, or printer hardware is unlikely to solve the network path. If the printer is on a different Wi-Fi name, correcting that is the first priority. If the network names already match, the next questions are whether the device can find the printer and whether the printer received a new network address.

Common cause categories

  • printer is still connected to an old router or old Wi-Fi credentials
  • computer and printer are on different or isolated networks
  • Wi-Fi Direct was mistaken for the normal home network
  • Windows has a stale network printer entry or old address
  • the exact printer model has wireless-band or setup restrictions

Relevant exceptions

Some printers support only certain Wi-Fi bands or setup methods. Check the exact model before changing advanced router security, channels, or band settings. A managed office network may also require administrator help.

When deeper troubleshooting is needed

If the printer and computer are on the same normal network but wireless printing still fails, use the guided network-change path. Keep USB as a working comparison if convenient; do not repeatedly reinstall the printer hardware just because the Wi-Fi path is failing.

Use the existing network-change flow to compare the printer and device without resetting the router blindly.
