How to Set the Default Printer in Windows 11
If Windows keeps choosing the wrong printer, set the printer you actually use as the default. Windows can also manage the default automatically based on recent use.
Quick checks
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- If Windows manages your default printer automatically, turn that option off before choosing a fixed default.
- Select the correct printer and choose Set as default.
- Print one simple page to confirm jobs are going to the right queue.
Try these fixes in order
Step 1
Open Printers & scanners
Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
Step 2
Decide whether Windows should manage the default
If you want one printer to stay the default, turn off Let Windows manage my default printer if that option is enabled.
Step 3
Choose the printer you actually use
Select the correct physical printer. Be careful with duplicates, old office printers, and virtual PDF printers.
Step 4
Set it as default
Choose Set as default. Windows should now show that printer as the default queue.
Step 5
Test from the app that was choosing the wrong printer
Open a simple document, choose Print, and confirm the correct printer appears before sending the job.
