What usually causes it

  • An Ethernet cable is unplugged, damaged, or connected to an inactive switch/router port.
  • The router, switch, access point, or other required network device is powered off or still starting.
  • The printer is being checked for Wi-Fi while the intended setup actually depends on a wired network path.

What to try

Step 1

Check which network connection you intend to use

Decide whether this printer should be on Ethernet or Wi-Fi so you do not troubleshoot the wrong interface.

Step 2

For Ethernet, reseat the cable at both ends

Confirm the cable clicks into the printer and a live router/switch port. Try a known-good cable or port if link lights remain absent.

Step 3

Make sure the network equipment is fully powered

Wait for the router, switch, or access point to finish starting before printing another network report.

Step 4

Run the network connection check again

Generate a fresh report after the physical link is restored and continue only if a different code remains.

After each corrective action

Retry the same operation that produced E-1. If it now works, stop there rather than changing unrelated printer, network, supply, or service settings.

If the code returns

If E-1 remains with a known-good cable and active network port, compare the Ethernet link state on the switch and printer or test the intended Wi-Fi setup separately.

When service may be needed

Persistent lack of link on multiple known-good cables/ports may require Epson support, but most E-1 cases are cabling or network-equipment availability rather than an internal repair.
